Rene's Collage: AP Identity Journal #1

When we were first asked to do an Identity Journal I didn't know how to react. I felt like this was homework from AP English again that I had to do for a grade. On my way home I started picturing what to do and that is when I came across the idea of doing this collage. When I first started the collage I thought that the assignment was to portray the role of men and women in society, but as I read it over again I found out that I had represent my identity and who I am to society.

The section to the left is full of successful women and men within the Hollywood scene and those who are successful in their daily lives. Towards the bottom of the collage to the left side I made half of a woman and half a man's face to signify that to me there is no clear definition of or limit to "men" and "women".

I then started doing a section with which I identify. Within the section of successful gay, lesbian and transgendered men and women there are people who have fought against the ravaging scene of hatred. My collage identifies who I am in this society. I to many people am a male (a straight male), but to many who know me I am a GAY male. I am a man and a woman who doesn’t care to be the “odd” figure of their school or of their family. I don’t need to be a male or a female because I can be both. My collage is an inspiration and representation of how I live my daily life. I am a successful gay male in society.
